Family Dispute Resolution

Delivering supportive and accessible family dispute resolution.

Under Australian family law, it is compulsory for separated parents to attempt Family Dispute Resolution (FDR) before applying to a family law court for parenting orders.

FDR is a special type of mediation designed to help separating families come to their own parenting and property agreements. During FDR families discuss their issues and consider different options, while being encouraged to focus on the needs of their children (for those with children). Irenicon Mediation offers a neutral, mutual approach with an accredited Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner (FDRP).

FDR is a practical, low-cost (in comparison to Court) way for separating families to sort out future parenting and property arrangements with professional help. For more information see FDR Factsheet.

Mediators do not provide legal advice on individual family law matters (including FDR) or proceedings. You can seek independent legal advice or call the Family Relationship Advice Line on 1800 050 321 to speak to a legal advisor.

Mediation is a confidential peace-making exercise (not peacekeeping).  It does not entertain submission or acquiescing by either person in the conflict.  Mediation seeks to discover the real needs and interests of all the participants, facilitated by a skilled, trained mediator.  This empowers the parties, through listening and creative problem-solving techniques, to discover new ways of seeing the situation and resolving their own issues.

Where relationships need to be preserved at work or in families, mediate first.
